The Movie Lists

The idea for making movie lists first started seven years ago, when I began a subscription to Blockbuster.com.  I realized that my account kept track of all the movies I rented for the year, and with that came the idea to rank, in order, every single movie I saw over the course of the year, from worst to best.  So for the last eight years I've ranked every movie I've watched.  This website is a spot for me to put the lists from past years, as well as put together new lists of some of my all-time favorites.  Please feel free to add your comments about different movies or lists on the site - that's kind of the point!

2013-2014 Movie List

It’s finals week, so that means it’s time for my annual ranking of every single movie I saw this year.   My movie year runs from the start of each summer to the end of the next school year, so it includes movies from 2013 and 2014.   This was a great year for movie-watching.   I was able to watch 93 movies, easily topping last year’s 80, which was my previous record.   Not only did I see a lot of movies, there were a ton of really good ones.   I ranked the 72 that came out in the last year and a half, but I also have some comments about the older ones at the bottom of the list.   I realize this list is ridiculously long, but hopefully you’ll enjoy looking through it.   Please feel free to comment on the movies you’ve seen – that’s really the point of the whole list.   72. Cloud Atlas Despite taking the bottom spot on the list, I will admit that I was actually interested by this movie.   It seemed like it almost could have been a good mov...

2016/2017 Movie List

I've been doing these movie lists for more than a decade now, and my days of watching 80-90 movies in a year are over.  Getting older and a growing family took care of that.  Between the theaters and home I was still able to watch about 50 movies this year, which I suppose isn't too bad.  I watched more clunkers this year than usual, and there were quite a few movies that were just so-so, but my top 10 is filled with some really great films.  Enjoy the list, and let me know what movies you loved this year! 2016/2017 Movie List 44. Anomolisa With the movie at the bottom of the list each year, I always feel like I am partially at fault.  If it is so bad, why not just stop watching?  The thing is, the writer of this movie, Charlie Kaufman, used to be one of my favorites.  He wrote Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, all interesting, creative movies.  Maybe that’s why I didn’t give up when I realized th...

2011-2012 Movie Rankings

I think most of you that I’m sending this list to have already read my movie rankings in the past, so I’ll spare the long intro.   Remember that it’s just a list of what I enjoyed the most, not necessarily what I thought was the best quality movie.   A good example from last year was Precious, which I thought was a very good movie, but I didn’t really enjoy it that much, and only ranked it at #39.   I watched fewer movies this year than last, in part because the Blockbuster in my neighborhood went out of business (I still do Blockbuster by mail), and also because it just seemed like there weren’t as many movies I wanted to see.   Last year my top two movies, Inception and True Grit are both probably in my top 50 movies of all time.   This year there was nothing nearly that good.   Really, all of my top 10 are movies that I had fun watching, but nothing stood out as a classic.   The only other change to the list is I didn’t put older movies in the num...
